Setting speaker distance of wireless surround system

Why is it important to set the speaker distances in my wireless surround system?
Speaker Distances are used to calibrate the delay in the home theater system.
This makes the system sound more life-like.
The distance of a particular speaker is the physical measurement (as close as you can) from the front of the speaker to the center of your listening position (couch, chair, etc.).
